Thanksgiving Day 2006

As if the year hasn’t progressed quickly enough, it is amazing to think that Thanksgiving has already come and nearly gone. Thanksgiving takes on so many meanings for people. For some, it is an opportunity to get together with family and eat turkey. Others enjoy the age old football games involving either the Dallas Cowboys or Detroit Lions. Some revel in the planning of their shopping journey for the following day, commonly referred to as “Black Friday”, when retailers slash their prices and attempt to make a profit before the end of the year. But when thinking about the real significance of the holiday, it’s more than just food and football. It’s a day for reflection. It’s a time that you can relax and think about all that you have. Optimism prevails on Thanksgiving with faith as the driving force. Family and health become the focal points.

Thanksgiving has become just that for me. To have a roof over my head and food on my plate is more than enough to be thankful for. The added love of those around me only adds to that cornucopia. While it was different not to spend Thanksgiving with my parents, it does not diminish my notions of thankfulness for them or anyone else in my life. It is fitting that Thanksgiving is a precursor to Christmas. The sentiment of today’s holiday leads into a season of thankfulness for the opportunity to live an eternity of happiness through the celebration of the birth of one who sacrificed all that he was thankful for to preserve all that we appreciate in life.

Happy Thanksgiving. And welcome to the Christmas season.
